The Teak Tree

teak tree Teak (Tectona grandis) has for centuries been known by shipbuilders for its beauty, remarkable texture and its resistance against dry rot and extreme weather conditions. Naturally this wood retains its high oil content that prevents the wood from drying out. It was thought for a long time ago that this kind of lumber is best for furniture making.

Teak (Tectona) is a genus of tropical hardwood trees in the family Verbenaceae, native to the south and southeast countries of Asia. They are large trees, growing to 30-40 meters tall.

There are three species of teak:

* Tectona grandis (Common Teak) is by far the most important, with a wide distribution in India and Indo-China.

* Tectona hamiltoniana (Dahat Teak) is a local endemic species confined to Myanmar, where it is endangered.

* Tectona philippinensis (Philippine Teak) is endemic to the Philippines, and is also endangered.

teak treeWith an average lifespan of 75 years, teak wood has long been acclaimed as the best choice for indoor/outdoor furnishings. The natural oil content in the wood makes teak resistant to water, weather and warping, allowing it to withstand season after season of use. Over time teak will age to a soft silver color. The original ""new"" look may be maintained with the application of teak oil once or twice a year, though most prefer the classic elegance of aged wood. Small cracks may appear in the surface of the wood, this is part of the natural aging process and in no way harms the furniture's integrity. Also, compared to many other woods, teak weathers in such a way that it stays smooth to the touch.

Reclaimed / Recycled  teakwood used in our indoor teak furniture is kiln dried (whenever necessary) to reduce moisture content, thus reducing warping and stabilizing the wood. All the furniture joints are made with interlocking mortis and tenon, bow tie, and dovetail joinery where applicable. After construction, our furniture is hand sanded for a beautiful finish.
